Euphorbia characias L.
Robust, many-stemmed perennial, somewhat woody at base, soft-pubescent to glabrescent. Flowering stems ± simple, 40–120 cm tall, with conspicuous leaf scars below, densely leafy above. Leaves numerous, narrowly oblanceolate, entire. Ray leaves like upper cauline leaves. Terminal umbel with 20–50 rays. Raylet leaves suborbicular, connate in pairs, yellow. Glands 4, truncate or horned, often dark reddish. Capsule 5–7 mm, smooth, thinly pilose to villous. Seeds c. 3 mm, silvery-grey, smooth, with rather large, broadly conical caruncle.
