Carduus pycnocephalus L.

Carduus argentatus: Annual with a fairly stout taproot, sparsely arachnoid-tomentose throughout. Stem erect, sparingly branched, generally 40–70 cm, with green, spiny wings. Lower leaves pinnatifid, the upper usually simple, linear-oblong, all spiny-dentate. Capitula solitary on long, slender peduncles. Involucre 14–20 mm, twice as long as broad; phyllaries numerous, imbricate, lanceolate, extended into a greenish apical spine with thickened midrib and margins. Corolla 9–12 mm, pinkish-purple; tube widened above into an ellipsoid cup c. 2 mm. Achenes with pappus of long, simple hairs.

Differing from C. argentatus in the following characters: Stem broadly winged below, with triangular-spinose lobes; leaves generally broader, with long marginal spines, grey and densely arachnoid-tomentose beneath; capitula in clusters of 2 or 3.
