Scolymus hispanicus L.
Erect biennial or short-lived perennial, 30–70 cm tall. Stem robust, ± branched above, sparsely arachnoid-tomentose, with interrupted, spiny-dentate wings. Leaves oblanceolate to lanceolate, pinnatifid and lobed, spiny, with a network of thin lateral veins; margins not or scarcely thickened. Capitula usually in a narrow panicle, subsessile, exceeded by subtending leaves. Involucre 10–20 mm; phyllaries sparsely pubescent, acute. Florets all ligulate, golden yellow, much exceeding involucre. Achenes ovoid, somewhat compressed, enveloped by receptacular scales; pappus of a few rigid hairs.
