Spergularia media: Perennial herb with a slightly woody stock and procumbent to ascending flowering stems, usually 10–40 cm, glabrous throughout or usually glandular-pubescent in inflorescence. Leaves opposite, linear, semi-terete, fleshy, usually with 2+2 smaller leaves in their axils. Stipules scarious, broadly triangular, almost free, shortly acuminate. Inflorescence of several few-flowered, irregular dichasia. Sepals 4–6 mm, obtuse. Petals equalling or exceeding sepals, pale pink. Stamens (7–)10. Capsule ovoid-conical, much exceeding sepals. Seeds flat, dark brown, c. 0.8 mm (not including wing), orbicular to broadly comma-shaped, winged all around; wing thin, scarious, entire or shallowly serrate.
Resembling S. media, but differing in the following characters: Annual (occasionally perennial), with a slender taproot; sepals 2.5–4 mm; petals not exceeding sepals; stamens 1–5(–8); capsule slightly exceeding sepals; seeds winged, unwinged or mixed, wing when present ± lacerate.
