Perennial with a large, vertical, broadly cylindrical to turnip-shaped tuber, producing a single stem, which divides at ground level into several procumbent branches 10–25 cm. Leaves oblong, serrulate at least in upper third, sparsely pilose to glabrescent. Rays 3–5; raylet leaves broadly rhombic to trullate. Glands 4, transversely elliptical, without horns. Capsule c. 3.5 mm, densely covered with cylindrical tubercles, glabrous. Seeds c. 2.4 mm, smooth, glossy, dark brown; caruncle large, hemispherical.
