Datura stramonium: Large, foul-smelling, sparingly branched annual herb generally 40–100 cm tall. Leaves alternate, short-petiolate; blade large (8–20 cm), ovate-elliptical, sinuate-dentate or acutely lobed. Flowers large, solitary in branch forks, short-petiolate. Calyx 30–50 mm, tubular, angled; teeth 5–10 mm, unequal. Corolla twice as long as calyx, narrowly funnel-shaped, with prominent ribs, folded and opening only partially, white or pale lilac. Stamens and style included. Capsule erect, 4–7 cm, broadly ovoid, with a basal collar (persistent part of calyx), covered with ± equal, rather slender spines c. 10 mm, opening by 4 valves.
Resembling D. stramonium, but leaves shallowly lobed or subentire, greyish-green; calyx 60–90 mm, with narrow teeth 12–25 mm; corolla 12–20 cm; capsule almost spherical, nodding, with larger basal collar and long slender spines, dehiscing irregularly.
