Xanthium spinosum L.
Much-branched annual, generally 20–80 cm tall. Leaves subsessile, ovate-lanceolate, entire or lobed, dark green above, grey-tomentose beneath, with a strong, 3-fid, yellowish spine at base. Male capitula inconspicuous, subglobose, in terminal clusters. Female capitula solitary in leaf axils, forming a closed structure with 2 1-flowered cavities; fruiting capitulum c. 10 mm, ellipsoid, with 1(–2) straight apical spine(s); surface with hooked spines c. equalling diameter of capitulum.
